Location Two: Dewey Point above Yosemite Valley

Dewey Point above Yosemite Valley

This is, quite simply, one of my favourite spots in the universe. Hopefully the National Park Service will not be under government shutdown.

It has been the location for Okpik Two on most occasions I have participated.

Located outside of the Yosemite Ski and Snowboard Area (formerly known as Badger Pass), it is approximately 3.5 miles out to the rim. Situated very near the top of Bridal Veil Falls, the views can be fantastic - or nonexistent when "socked in." A camping permit is available at the Yosemite Ski and Snowboard Park Service office.

The first mile follows the road to Glacier Point, heading left into a meadow with a meandering stream that can sometimes form watery pits in the snow. It is a popular trail. After that mile, the trail crosses a series of small hills and eventually comes to the edge of the world - or so it seems.

Be extremely cautious when near the rim. snow cornices can disguise holes or gaps in the rock. Scouts should be carefully monitored.

That having been said, the background image for this blog was taken there, and it is worth moving away from the comfort of car camping.

Here is a topo of the area.

Here is some additional information on the trek.
